Photo Journal: Historic damage

Stone walls and roof tiles of Kumamoto Castle are seen collapsed in the city of Kumamoto after a powerful earthquake in the Kyushu region, in this picture taken from a Mainichi Shimbun helicopter on April 15, 2016. The steeply sloped stone walls, known as "Mushagaeshi" (warrior-repelling) and designated as a special historic site, were damaged in six areas. "We have never heard of such serious damage to the stone walls before in the castle's long history. The stone walls may suffer cracks from aftershocks, collapsing even further. It will take a considerable amount of time to restore the structure," said a representative of the castle's general administration office. (Mainichi)
