Tokyo Gov. Yoichi Masuzoe revealed on April 27 that he had used an official vehicle for 48 trips between his second home in the hot spring town of Yugawara, Kanagawa Prefecture, and places of official business between April 2015 and April 2016.
He revealed the trips during a press briefing regarding a report published on April 27 by the Shukan Bunshun weekly magazine.
Masuzoe said that he had visited his vacation home in Yugawara that doubles as an office, and that he went there to do work in peace and quiet on weekends.
"I take materials (to the second home) to prepare for the next week's work. There is no problem at all as I have been doing it in accordance with rules," he stated. In the event of responding to an emergency, he said, "There is no problem because there are vice governors who hold the fort and a contact system in place."
According to a Tokyo Metropolitan Government official concerned, Masuzoe used the official vehicle to travel to his resort home only from his official workplaces such as the Tokyo Metropolitan City Hall, and occasionally from the second home to carry out official duties. The official said Masuzoe had never used the official vehicle to go back to his Tokyo home from the resort on private business.
