Dozens file suit seeking repeal of approval for Sendai nuclear reactor restarts

FUKUOKA -- Dozens of people from 10 prefectures have brought an administrative lawsuit to the Fukuoka District Court demanding that the national government revoke its approval for Kyushu Electric Power Co. to reactivate reactors No. 1 and No. 2 at Sendai Nuclear Power Plant in Kagoshima Prefecture.

The 33 plaintiffs, who include residents of Kagoshima, Kumamoto and Fukuoka prefectures, are claiming that confirmation given in September 2014 by the Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA), a government agency, that the two reactors meet the new safety standards established after the Fukushima nuclear crisis broke out in 2011 is illegal.

In their complaint, the plaintiffs say that the NRA underestimated the risks posed by volcanoes, ignoring the latest research, and therefore gave authorization to Kyushu Electric illegally.
