Photo Journal: Remembering fallen souls

Candles are seen being carried on the night of June 22, the eve of Okinawa Memorial Day, at Peace Memorial Park in the Mabuni district of Itoman, Okinawa Prefecture, which is the site of the last fierce fighting that took place at the end of the Pacific War during the Battle of Okinawa. Some 7,000 candles were lit that night to spell out the word "peace" in front of the park's Cornerstone of Peace monument, on which is inscribed the names of the war dead. Meanwhile, a ceremony organized by the Okinawa Foundation was held at the adjacent Okinawa Peace Memorial Chapel, where bereaved family members and others observed a moment of silence as a peace bell tolled.
