HAGA, Tochigi -- A 2-year-old boy died after his father left him inside a car in a parking lot for several hours on July 29, it has been learned.
According to Mooka Police Station, the father in his 30s put his son in a child seat in the backseat of the car to take him to day care on the morning of July 29, but apparently forgot he was in the car and went straight to work in Haga, Tochigi Prefecture.
After his wife called him shortly past 5 p.m., the father realized his mistake and found his son limp inside the vehicle at around 5:10 p.m. He immediately called emergency services.
However, the boy was subsequently confirmed dead, according to police and other sources. As the 2-year-old had no external injuries, police suspect he may have died from heatstroke. The boy was apparently left in the parking lot for about eight hours.
The father lives in Utsunomiya and commutes to a company in Haga every day.
