84% in favor of Emperor Akihito's abdication: Mainichi poll

Eighty-four percent of those surveyed by the Mainichi Shimbun supported Emperor Akihito's apparent wish to abdicate, with the majority of respondents in favor of making revisions to the Imperial House Act for future emperors to be able to retire.

There are currently no provisions in the Imperial House Act in regard to abdication of emperors. Of those who supported Emperor Akihito's abdication in the Mainichi opinion survey taken on Sept. 3 and 4, 84 percent said the law should be changed in order for the current and future emperors to be able to hand down the throne, while 12 percent were in favor of legal measures just for the current Emperor to retire.

Meanwhile, only 4 percent said they disapproved Emperor Akihito's abdication.
