Photo Journal: Stylish station

This artist's conception shows a planned new station on the JR Yamanote Line in central Tokyo, to be opened in spring 2020. Going by the temporary name Shinagawa Shin Station, the new station's plan, announced on Sept. 6 by East Japan Railway Co. (JR East), was designed by Kengo Kuma, the architect behind the planned new national stadium -- the main venue for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics. Among the notable features of the new station's Japanese-style design are the large ceiling, made to resemble origami folded paper, and an abundant use of lumber. According to JR East, the facility would be the first new station on the Yamanote Line since Nishi-Nippori Station was built in 1971. (Image courtesy of JR East)
