Heavy mercury contamination detected in air beneath Toyosu market buildings

Mercury concentrations up to seven times the government-set maximum have been detected in the air in the hollow spaces beneath main structures of the new Toyosu wholesale market, it was revealed on Oct. 15.

The toxic substance measurements, taken by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, were disclosed at an expert panel meeting. Metro Tokyo built the Toyosu facility in Koto Ward to replace the famous but aging Tsukiji market in Chuo Ward.

Toxic benzene and arsenic in excess of national upper limits set by the Environment Ministry were detected in the eighth round of ground water monitoring underneath the new market structures, conducted before the air tests.
