Okinawa Gov. Takeshi Onaga stated in a congratulatory message sent to U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on Nov. 10 that he held expectations for Trump's strong leadership.
In the telegram message, Onaga also said he hoped there would be an opportunity created to talk together about the relationship between Okinawa and the United States and that there will be a good outcome from it.
During his election campaign, Trump brought up his argument touching on the possibility of withdrawing U.S. military forces from Japan. On Nov. 9, Onaga said he was hopeful about how Trump would respond to the Okinawa base issue.
It is extremely rare for the governor of Okinawa Prefecture to send a congratulatory message to the winner of a U.S. presidential election.
