Photo Journal: Spectacular skylight

Pillars of light are seen in the clouds above the Tsugaru Strait south of the Hokkaido city of Hakodate on the evening of Nov. 24, 2016. The unusual natural phenomenon, which occurs during cold weather, was observed over a period of about one hour from around 7 p.m. According to the Hakodate Local Meteorological Observatory, light from the ground is reflected in clouds formed from ice crystals at altitudes of at least 3,000 meters. The light is believed to have come from squid fishing boats. The phenomenon can be observed all over Japan if the conditions are right. It is occasionally seen during the winter squid fishing season in Hakodate. (Mainichi)
