Photo Journal: Lavish lighting

A structure is seen lit up with decorative lights on Nov. 28, 2016, during a test run for the annual "Kobe Luminarie" lighting event to take place from Dec. 2 through Dec. 11, in Chuo Ward, Kobe. Some 300,000 LEDs, or light-emitting diodes, were lit up in order starting at 10 p.m., as passersby took in the dazzling spectacle. The event started as a memorial for victims of the 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake, and this year will mark the 22nd time it will be held. Following accidents last year where decorations were knocked over by strong winds, the display this year has been reinforced to withstand winds of up to 30 meters per second, or 108 kilometers per hour.
