Photo Journal: In a galaxy (not so) far, far away

Visitors dressed in costumes enjoy the space-themed Abukuma limestone cave in Tamura, Fukushima Prefecture, on Dec. 4, 2016, as a winter illumination event began here on the same day. The Abukuma cave used to be a major tourist spot in the prefecture, attracting some 300,000 visitors a year, but the figure dropped to around 50,000 in fiscal 2011 after the Fukushima nuclear disaster since the cave is located approximately 30 kilometers from the crippled nuclear plant. The winter lighting event started two years ago in a bid to bring back visitors, and the number of annual visitors reached around 200,000 in fiscal 2015. The event is held through Feb. 28, 2017, and the cave will be lit up from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. every day. (Mainichi)
