Photo Journal: Geisha-style greeting

Apprentice geisha greet Yachiyo Inoue V, left -- head of the Inoue School of Kyomai, or Kyoto-style dance -- as part of the "Koto Hajime" year-end greetings ahead of preparations for the new year, in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto on Dec. 13, 2016. During the ritual, apprentice geisha convey their gratitude to their teacher for the year that is about to finish, and express their wish for a continued good relationship in the year to come. Pupils will often give gifts such as kagami mochi rice cake decorations to their teachers during this time. (Mainichi)
