Photo Journal: Return rush

A young boy waves to his father through the window of a Shinkansen bullet train at JR Tokyo Station, as he heads to his family's hometown during the New Year's holidays, on Dec. 29, 2016. From early in the morning on Dec. 29, JR Tokyo Station was particularly crowded with passengers trying to return to their hometowns for the New Year's break. Notably, shinkansen bullet trains on the JR Tokaido Line, departing from Tokyo Station, were mostly full to capacity throughout the entire day. There were some trains on which the percentage of passengers with non-reserved tickets was 150 percent, and at certain points in the day, there were lines of passengers stretching down from platforms to areas downstairs, near the entrance gates.
