Photo Journal: Leaping into 2017

People watch as a display board shows a leap second added for 2017, in Koganei, Tokyo, on Jan. 1, 2017. The second, which was added simultaneously worldwide, occurred between 8:59:59 and 9 a.m. Japanese time, as the clock displayed 8:59:60. It was the first adding of a leap second in a year and a half, since July 1, 2015, and the 27th since 1972. Leap seconds are added every few years to offset the differences that appear in the time of atomic clocks, which are very accurate and used for modern time-tracking, and time based on the Earth's rotation, which varies in its speed.
