Photo Journal: Dangling decoration

Dangling "Sagemon" ornaments presented as gifts are seen in the build up to the "hinamatsuri" girls' day festival in the Fukuoka Prefecture city of Yanagawa on Jan. 12, 2017. The suspension of ornaments ahead of the March 3 festival is a seasonal Yanagawa tradition that originally started in the Edo period. Based on the Edo period saying "50 years of life," 51 ornaments, such as dolls and balls are traditionally included in each Sagemon -- as this is regarded as a wish for one extra year of life. The Sagemon exhibition will continue at the "Ohana" residence in Yanagawa until mid-April. Admission is 500 yen for adults, 300 yen for high school students, and 200 yen for junior high and elementary school students. (Mainichi)
