Ice sculptures are lit up in a variety of colors at the Lake Shikotsu Ice Festival in Chitose, Hokkaido, on Jan. 26, 2017. The illuminated sculptures seen here were lit up as part of a trial run before the festival opens to the public on Jan. 27. Using a total of some 150,000 metric tons of water collected from Lake Shikotsu, the sculptures were created by repeatedly spraying the lake water onto iron and wooden frames. The ice festival's main attractions are the "Blue Tower," a 13-meter-high sculpture bathed in blue lighting, and the "Lake Shikotsu Blue Pond." The ice festival will run until Feb. 19, with the sculptures being lit up between 4:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. (Mainichi)
