PM's wife erased from website of controversial school linked to shady gov't land deal

OSAKA -- Amid controversy over an elementary school with a nationalistic agenda set to open in the Osaka Prefecture city of Toyonaka in April, a section of the school's website listing Akie Abe, the wife of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, as the school's honorary principal was deleted, it was learned on Feb. 23.

The originally state-owned land on which Mizuho-no-kuni Kinen Elementary School is being built was sold to school operator Moritomo Gakuen at roughly 14 percent of its appraisal price.

The section on the school's website that was deleted had a photo of Akie Abe, with the title, "Honorary Principal Akie Abe, wife of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe," and had a few words of praise for the school from Akie Abe herself.

Referring to Akie Abe's appointment as the school's honorary principal at a press conference on Feb. 23, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told reporters, "The government does not keep track of what the prime minister's wife does as an individual."
