Tourist crashes go-kart into Tokyo police box

A South Korean tourist crashed a rented go-kart into a police box in Tokyo's Minato Ward on March 5, police said.

The accident happened at around 2:50 p.m. in the ward's Shibakoen area. The tourist, a woman in her 20s, apparently failed to negotiate a turn at an intersection, driving her vehicle onto a sidewalk and then crashing into the wall of the police box. There were no injuries reported.

The woman is believed to have been driving with a group of other tourists in go-karts rented from Shinagawa Ward, Tokyo-based MariCar Inc. at the time.

The firm's services also include renting out costumes based on video game characters that customers can wear while zipping around the city, making MariCar popular with tourists. However, Nintendo Co., maker of the popular Mario Kart video game series, is currently suing MariCar for copyright violations and demanding that they close down their business.
