Evacuations ordered after fire breaks out at Ibaraki Pref. waste processing plant

MITO -- A fire broke out at an industrial waste processing plant in Inashiki, Ibaraki Prefecture, on March 17, prompting the city to issue an evacuation order for nearly 750 households, municipal officials said.

    An emergency call was made at about noon on March 17 reporting that a fire had broken out at Sanwayuka Industry Corp.'s Ibaraki plant. One worker suffered light burns while another reportedly remains unaccounted for.

    The city issued the evacuation order at 1:45 p.m. on March 17, covering 749 households in four districts, a municipal official said.

    The company's website states that the plant opened in November 2011. It serves as an interim processing facility for industrial waste, and also has manufacturing facilities.
