Hiroshima man infected with hot spring bacteria dies

HIROSHIMA -- A man in his 50s has died from pneumonia contracted from Legionella pneumophila bacteria he contracted at a hot spring in Mihara, Hiroshima Prefecture, the prefectural government revealed on March 25.

    In addition to the man from eastern Hiroshima Prefecture, 39 people in their 30s to their 80s who were at the "Miharashi Onsen" hot spring have complained of pneumonia-like symptoms. Of those, 37 have been hospitalized, with two in serious condition. Normal operations at the hot spring have been suspended since March 21.

    According to the Hiroshima Prefectural Government, the man is thought to have used the facility in early March, and was hospitalized with symptoms including fever and difficulty breathing. Legionella pneumophila has been detected in all of the people complaining of symptoms and at Miharashi Onsen's baths.
