Gov't eyes prompt launch of shore protection work for U.S. base relocation in Okinawa

The government plans to start shore protection work off the Henoko district of Nago in Okinawa Prefecture as early as April 17 as part of the planned relocation of U.S. Marine Corps Air Station Futenma in Ginowan to the area, government sources have disclosed.

The work involves land reclamation off the coast of Henoko. The government is proceeding with installation of a screen to prevent water pollution from landfill work in the construction area.

Officials aim to complete the preparatory work this week, and begin construction as early as April 17.
