Photo Journal: Packed with energy

Runners set out at the start of the 27th Kasumigaura Marathon and International Blind Marathon 2017 in Tsuchiura, Ibaraki Prefecture, shortly after 10 a.m. on April 16, 2017. A total of 19,594 people took part in the marathon, which included categories for the blind, people with low vision and wheelchair users, as well as a walking category. The event is the only full marathon for the visually impaired in Japan recognized by the International Paralympic Committee. Blind runners were accompanied by runners including Olympians Takeyuki Nakayama, who ran at the 1988 and 1992 Games, and Yuko Arimori, who won medals at the 1992 and 1996 Olympics. The men's division was won by marathoner Saeki Makino. (Mainichi)
