Photo Journal: Bonito Bonanza

Dozens of blue-colored bonito streamers sway above the Iyoki River in the town of Kuroshio in Kochi Prefecture. The streamers, which can be seen from a nearby national road route, have been added to the traditional carp streamers in an attempt to publicize the prevalence of bonito in the area. Initially, the town only put up 20 carp streamers as part of its annual display, but over the years, bonito streamers have been added as well. The streamers have been placed on six ropes above the river, and there are 68 blue bonito streamers and 34 carp streamers in total, with each one being about 1 to 5 meters in length. The display will run through May 6, 2017. (Mainichi)
