Youngest pro shogi player Fujii extends record win streak to 16

OSAKA -- Sota Fujii, at 14 the youngest pro shogi player, extended his consecutive win record in official matches to 16 on May 4.

Fujii, a fourth-dan player, took 100 moves to beat 26-year-old amateur Daiki Yokoyama in the third match of the Shinjin O (King of the New Stars) tournament at the Kansai Shogi Kaikan hall in Fukushima Ward, Osaka. The tournament was sponsored by the Shimbun Akahata newspaper.

Fujii will encounter sixth-dan player Kazuhiro Nishikawa, 31, in the preliminary match of the Osho tournament on May 12.
