Photo Journal: Festival freshening

University student Sayo Tomita, the saio-dai (or heroine) of this year's Aoi Matsuri Festival in Kyoto, cleanses her hands as part of a ritual to purify her body and soul, at the Shimogamo Shrine in Kyoto's Sakyo Ward, on May 4, 2017. Tomita is a second-year student at Kyoto's Doshisha University, and was selected to be this year's heroine for the festival on May 15. After cleansing her hands at the shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage site, Tomita said, "I feel as though I've gone back in time to the Heian period. The water was cold, and it woke me up." (Mainichi)
