Photo Journal: Boundless blue

Blue "koinobori" carp streamers swim in a cloudless sky in Higashimatsushima, Miyagi Prefecture, on May 2, 2017. Higashimatsushima was heavily hit by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami disaster, and the idea for the blue carp came from 24-year-old Kento Ito. He lost four family members to the disaster, including his brother Ritsu, who was 5 at the time. Because Ritsu loved blue carp screamers, Ito gathered over 1,000 of them from around the country to fly them in the sky on Children's Day, May 5. Visiting Sendai resident Yuko Takahashi, 62, commented, "I feel the sentiment will make it to heaven." (Mainichi)
