Photo Journal: Yearning yokozuna

Yokozuna Kisenosato, 30, performs the "hono dohyoiri" ring-entering ritual on the grounds of Nominosukune Shrine in Tokyo's Sumida Ward, on May 12, 2017. Kisenosato, who reached the highest sumo rank of yokozuna in January 2017, carried out this ritual as part of the buildup to the 2017 May Grand Sumo Tournament at Tokyo's Ryogoku Kokugikan sumo venue, which will start on May 14. Nominosukune Shrine is significant in the sumo world as Nominosuke is considered to be the god of sumo. Kisenosato incurred an arm injury earlier in the year, but he has since regained fitness, and is able to compete in the grand sumo tournament, which will run until May 28. (Pool photo)
