Photo Journal: Carrying on tradition

Kanda Myojin Shrine parishioners carry a mikoshi portable shrine to Kanda Myojin in Tokyo's Chiyoda Ward on May 14, 2017, as the Kanda Festival, known as one of the three major Edo festivals, came to a close with portable shrines from different local parishioner associations being carried to the shrine's premises. Kanda Myojin has about 100 local parishioner groups, all located in central Tokyo. Amid the growing number of newcomer residents in the area and shrinking population of locals from generations past, some parishioner communities are using the annual festival to encourage interaction among old and new residents.
