YOKOHAMA -- A man was fatally hit by a train here after he jumped onto the tracks in a bid to flee as a fellow passenger accused him of groping her, it has been learned.
The man, who was in his 30s, was hit by a local train traveling from Oshiage to Chuo-rinkan at roughly 8:15 p.m. on May 15 at Aobadai Station on the Den-en-toshi Line in Yokohama's Aoba Ward. He was taken to the hospital where he was confirmed dead.
According to Aoba Police Station, the man was accused by a woman in her 30s aboard the same train of groping her when they reached the platform of Aobadai Station, and was being held by another passenger. When a station attendant came to address the issue, the man suddenly became violent, breaking free and jumping down onto the tracks. As he ran along the tracks, he was hit from behind by the train.
As a result of the incident, train services between Azamino and Nagatsuta stations on the Den-en-toshi Line were temporarily suspended. Operations by a total of 57 trains on the line were cancelled, affecting 23,200 passengers.
