Photo Journal: Voices in the wind

The register books of Hiroshima atomic bombing victims are seen laid before the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park cenotaph on May 17, 2017. Every year, these books are brought out of the stone coffer at the center of the monument and go through Hiroshima Municipal Government staff checks page by page as they let air flow through them. As of today, the names of a total of 303,195 people who had been confirmed dead by Aug. 5 last year, their dates of death and their age at death are listed in the 111 books. The names of 5,511 people have been added since May 2016 when the books last went through the same process. It is the first time the number of the names listed in the books has topped the 300,000 mark as A-bomb survivors are aging. (Mainichi)
