Emperor Akihito took part in an annual rice planting event at the Imperial Palace on May 22 in summery weather as the temperature in Tokyo hit 29 degrees Celsius.

Wearing rain boots, Emperor Akihito entered the rice paddy at the palace and planted rice seedlings he had grown himself.

Meanwhile, Empress Michiko fed mulberry leaves to silkworms on the same day at the palace cocoonery -- an annual event for the Empress.
