Photo Journal: Red carpet treatment

Red poppies are in full bloom at Showa Kinen Park, which straddles the western Tokyo cities of Tachikawa and Akishima, prompting visitors to take photographs of the blazing red carpet of flowers. On the "Hana no oka" hill in the northern part of the park some 1.8 million poppies are planted across an area of 1.1 hectares. The red poppies, also known as Shirley poppies, will be best for viewing until the end of this week, and a poppy picking event is scheduled for May 28. For more information, call the park's automated phone service at: 042-528-1751 (in Japanese). (Mainichi)
