Photo Journal: Taking a stand

People protest against an "anti-conspiracy" bill that has raised concerns of moves toward a surveillance society, in front of the National Diet Building in Tokyo on the evening of May 23, 2017. The bill to revise the Act on Punishment of Organized Crimes and Control of Crime Proceeds, which would criminalize preparation for terrorism and other crimes by changing the conditions that constitute conspiracy, was passed with support from the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, its coalition partner Komeito, as well as the opposition Nippon Ishin (Japan Innovation Party) at a May 23 plenary session of the House of Representatives, despite protests from other main opposition parties.
