Photo Journal: Verdant vision

In this recent photo, a tourist admires the green foliage reflected in the polished "green floor" of Jissoin Temple in Kyoto's Sakyo Ward. The pitch black floor is polished every morning and occasionally wiped with a cloth sack of rice bran to bring out the shine. The "green floor" appears in summer when the foliage is at its brightest, and is said to be more vivid on cloudy or rainy days. In autumn, the floor also reflects the colors of the fall foliage. The temple is open to visitors from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with an admission fee of 500 yen for high school students and above, and 250 yen for junior high and elementary school students. Jissoin Temple can be reached at 075-781-5464 (in Japanese) for inquiries. (Mainichi)
