SHANGHAI -- A flight was delayed roughly five hours after an elderly woman threw small change toward the engine of the plane at an airport here on June 27, according to Chinese media.
The woman reportedly told airport police that she threw the coins because she "wanted to pray for a safe flight."
The 80-year-old woman was boarding a China Southern Airlines flight at Shanghai Pudong International Airport bound for Guangzhou when she threw a fistful of change from the top of the boarding steps at the side of the aircraft toward the engine, police said.
The act was spotted by a fellow passenger and reported. The airline began an extensive inspection of the engine of the plane, and a single coin was discovered in the machinery. The flight took off safely approximately five hours behind schedule.
