Photo Journal: Floating around

Colorful "yamaboko" floats are seen parading the streets of disaster-hit Hita, Oita Prefecture, on July 22, 2017, during the Hita Gion Festival. The clear day marked the first festivities since Japanese Yama, Hoko, and Yatai float festivals were added to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2016. The festival, rooted in prayers to protect citizens against natural disasters and other dangers, took on a new meaning as many shops and houses in the Mameda district through which the parade proceeded had sustained heavy damage from the torrential rains that struck northern Kyushu earlier this month.
