Photo Journal: River revelry

Some 5,000 ritual fireworks color the night sky and the surface of the Okawa River in Osaka's Miyakojima Ward, on the evening of July 25, 2017. The fireworks and roughly 100 lantern-lit boats are part of "Funatogyo," a constituent of one of Japan's three major festivals, the Tenjin Festival. Some 12,000 passengers on the boats took part in a roughly 7-kilometer round trip along the river, and the celebrations reached a climax as the voices of passengers performing "Osaka-jime," a clapping ritual carried out every time boats pass one another, reverberated along the river.
