Photo Journal: Night of 10,000 lanterns

Giant bamboo lattices of lanterns called "kanto" light up the night at the Akita Kanto Festival, one of Tohoku's three largest festivals, on Aug. 3, 2017, in the city of Akita. This year features a record-breaking 282 kanto for a total of over 10,000 yellow lanterns crafted in the image of rice stalks ready for harvest. Four different types of kanto are paraded, with the largest having a height of roughly 12 meters and weighing 50 kilograms. Festivities will run until Aug. 6. (Mainichi)
