Students from the Kyoto Kimono Gakuin Kyoto Honko school donned Heian-period kimono to promote traditional Japanese costume at a kimono festival held at Nara Centennial Hall on Sept. 18, 2017, in Nara. Some 40 students showcased dressing and wearing "furisode" kimono and the royal "junihitoe" (a 12-layer kimono), along with tying the obi belt, set to music for the colorful fashion show. The "junihitoe" pictured, center, reportedly weighed roughly 13 kilograms and all the fabric laid out would cover roughly 128 square meters. The event, put on by The Cultural Foundation for Promoting the National Costume of Japan, was part of the annual National Cultural Festival to be held around the city until the end of November.
