Photo Journal: Shifting season

The autumn leaves around Mt. Asahi in the Daisetsuzan volcanic group are seen in this photo taken from a Mainichi Shimbun helicopter in Higashikawa, Hokkaido, on Sept. 22, 2017. The area around the 2,291-meter peak, the highest in Hokkaido, is full of color from the bright reds of the Japanese Rowan trees to the vibrant yellows of Erman's birch trees, ready for the enjoyment of hikers. According to the Daisetsu Asahidake Ropeway, cold days have continued since the beginning of September, making this years' display one week earlier than usual. The fall foliage, which can also be viewed from the ropeway's Sanroku Station at an altitude of 1,100 meters, will continue until the beginning of October. (Mainichi)
