Film distributor Toho Co. is jointly creating a live-action Hollywood adaptation of the smash hit anime feature "Kimi no Na wa" ("your name.") with American studios, the distributor announced on Sept. 28.

Toho has granted studios including Paramount Pictures the right to make the film. J.J. Abrams, the director of such blockbusters as "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" (2015), will take the helm for the film's production, which will also include the participation of original producer Genki Kawamura as a producer on the team.

Original director Makoto Shinkai commented, "The movie 'your name.' was created using the local imagination of those of us who live in Japan, and domestic techniques. By passing that on to Hollywood, it may open the door to a whole new set of possibilities."

The animated feature film "your name." was released in Japan in August 2016. As of Sept. 24, 2017, it is the second-highest grossing domestic film ever -- with over 25 billion yen in box-office sales, according to Japanese box-office tracking firm Kogyo Tsushinsha. The movie has been distributed in 135 countries and regions.
