Photo Journal: Warming up for winter

Snowboarders and skiers wearing costumes slide down a slope at the "Snowtown Yeti" ski resort, in Susono, Shizuoka Prefecture, on Oct. 6, 2017, the opening day for the new season. According to the resort, it is the earliest opening of a ski ground in Japan for the 19th straight season and was 15 days earlier than last year -- it's also the earliest day ever to open in Japan. Those who wore costumes received free passes for the day. About 500 people enjoyed the artificial snow, with some dressed up in various ways. The resort is located at the second station of Mount Fuji, at an altitude of 1,300 to 1,450 meters. The artificial snow generators have been working at the resort since Sept. 22 and made 650 tons of snow daily so one of the ski ground's five slopes could open. (Mainichi)
