SHIMONOSEKI, Yamaguchi -- The Yamaguchi No. 4 constituency is Shinzo Abe's home turf, but with the prime minister and ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) leader crisscrossing Japan making campaign speeches, it was his wife Akie that was carrying the LDP banner here on Oct. 10.

Japan's first lady spoke before supporters at Shimonoseki's Kaikyo Yume plaza, saying, "Please let my husband continue his work, and do his job for this country."

However, she did not make any mention of the Kake Educational Institution and Moritomo Gakuen favoritism scandals, the latter of which she was herself caught up in. Some 1,200 supporters listened to her speech, according to Abe's campaign staff.
