Photo Journal: Fiery fall

Round summer cypress, or kochia, reached the peak of their bright red fall color at Hitachi Seaside Park in Hitachinaka, Ibaraki Prefecture, on Oct. 18, 2017. Visitors to the national park can enjoy the roughly 32,000 bushes planted on the gentle slope. The plant used to be dried and used for brooms, so it also has the Japanese name "hokigusa," or broom grass. The ball-shaped bushes start to turn their fiery color at the beginning of October, and visitors can enjoy their peak through this weekend. (Mainichi)
