Toyota Motor Corp. launched its spacious "JPN Taxi" wagon on Oct. 23, targeting wheelchair users and visitors to Japan from abroad.

With a goal to make the taxi model a major tourism attraction like the vehicles in London and New York, the new car aims to express the Japanese "omotenashi" hospitality spirit. Toyota aims to encourage taxi companies to provide a total of 10,000 of the vehicles, which is about one-third of all taxis in Tokyo, in time for 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.

Toyota had not released an exclusive taxi model since 1995. For easy access for seniors and children, a low body and power sliding door have been adopted. Moreover, safety has been improved through the use of the latest collision avoidance support system. The new model will be offered in three colors, deep indigo, black and white.
