CDP set to suspend new lawmaker Aoyama after release of sexual harassment article

The Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan (CDP) on Oct. 26 decided that newly elected lawmaker Masayuki Aoyama will be suspended indefinitely as a member of the party following the release of a magazine article outlining allegations that he sexually harassed a secretary.

    Aoyama was elected to the House of Representatives through the Tokai proportional representation bloc in the general election on Oct. 22.

    An article in the latest edition of the weekly magazine Shukan Bunshun that went on sale on Oct. 26 outlined allegations by a former secretary of the legal office Aoyama headed that he had sexually harassed her.

    In response to the article, Aoyama released a statement stating, "While some things were different from the way I perceived them, I'm sorry if I caused pain."
