Train hits truck stuck on railway crossing in Kumamoto Pref., 11 passengers injured

KUMAMOTO -- A sightseeing train hit a flatbed truck stuck on a railway crossing in Kumamoto Prefecture on Nov. 3, injuring 11 train passengers, Kyushu Railway Co. (JR Kyushu) said.

    At around 10:15 a.m., the three-car "Kawasemi Yamasemi No. 2" limited express bound for Kumamoto from Hitoyoshi hit the flatbed truck hauling construction machinery on a crossing on the JR Hisatsu Line in Yatsushiro, Kumamoto Prefecture, the local JR Kyushu branch stated.

    Of the 67 passengers onboard, 11 were slightly injured. According to JR Kyushu, the truck driver tried to hit the rail crossing's emergency stop button after the barrier bar got caught on the excavator on the flatbed, but it was too late.

    Services on the Hisatsu Line have been suspended between Yatsushiro and Hitoyoshi following the accident.
