TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Nippon Ham Fighters' slugging ace Shohei Otani announced Saturday he wants to move to the major leagues through the posting system.

The Pacific League club said the previous day they will allow the right-hander to use the system this offseason to try to land a deal with a major league team.

The 23-year-old two-way player in 2016 helped the Fighters win the Japan Series and was voted the Pacific League's MVP as well as its top pitcher and designated hitter.

Otani, who had ankle surgery last month and is currently undergoing rehabilitation, just completed his fifth season with the Sapporo-based Fighters.
