KYOTO -- World heritage site Kiyomizu-dera Temple tested the lights on the evening of Nov. 10 here ahead of a special autumn night viewing event set to run through Dec. 3.
The main hall of the temple is currently undergoing maintenance of its cypress-bark roof, revealing the bare roof of the national treasure for the first time in 50 years. In front of the structure, some 1,000 red maple trees have started to show their fall colors.
The peak of the autumn foliage is estimated to be at the end of November, and the light-up begins at 5:30 p.m. During the special night viewing event, entry into the temple grounds has been extended until 9 p.m. Admission is 400 yen.
